‘Allāmah Ahmad Rida  Khan (affectionately called A’lā Hazrat)

‘Āshiqĕ Rasūl, the Abū Hanīfah of modern times ~
Early Life
Imām Ahmad Rida Khan was born into a family of scholars on Monday, the 10th of Shawaal 1272 A.H (14th June 1856 CE) in Bareilly Northern India. Imām Ahmad Rida Khan was the son of Moulānā Naqī Áli Khān and Sayyidah Amman Miyān. His father was Moulana Naqi Áli Khan, a respected scholar who authored more than 50 books. One of his famous book on Mawlid–un-Nabi titled Suroorul Quloob fi Zikri Mouloodul Mahboob [Joy of the Hearts in Commemorating the birth of the Beloved], which received a very high distinctive position inIslamic literature.
His Educational & Spiritual Training
In addition to mastering the sciences of Algebra, Arithmetic, Astronomy, Philosophy, Logic, History, Prose, Calligraphy, Languages (Arabic, Urdu, Hindi and Persian); the Imām was said to have a commanding knowledge of 54 branches of various sciences and humanities, ‘Allāmah Ahmed Rida studied an array of twenty religious sciences mainly under the tutelage of his father Moulana Naqī Áli Khān, the son of ‘Allāmah Mawlana Raza Ali Khan. He also studied under the guidance of the following luminous personalities rahmatullahi ‘alayhim / (may Allah have mercy on all of them):
He also took knowledge of Islam and ijazahs in Hadīth from the following scholars:

  • Moulana Abdul ‘Ali Khan Rampurī (d. 1303 AH) – student of ‘Allāmah Fazle Haq Khairabadī, Shah Abu’l Husain Ahmad al-Nūrī Marehrawī (d. 1324 AH) – student of Moulana Nūr Ahmad Badayunī
  • Shah Aale Rasūl Marehrawī (d. 1297 AH) – student of Shah Abdul Azīz Muhaddith Dihlawī (d. 1239 AH)
  • Hadrat Moulana Abdul Ali Rampuri
  • Hadrat ‘Allamah Syed Shah Abul Hassan Ahmed Noori
  • Sheikhĕ Tariqah, Hadrat ‘Allamah Shah Ale Rasool Mahrahrewi
  • Sheikh Ahmed bin Zaini Dahlaan al-Makki
  • Sheikh Abdur Rahman al-Makki
  • Sheikh Hussain bin Salih al-Makki

Imām Ahmad Rida Khan earned many authorizations; the most important (according to his own affirmation) was from the Mufti of Makkah, Shaykh Ábd ar-Raĥmān as-Sirāj ibn Ábdullāh as-Sirāj. At 22 years of age while on Hajj with his father, he also received many honours from renowned sūfi teachers of his time. The Hajj that Imām Ahmad performed in 1295 A.H. (1876) was a turning point in his life.

Imām Ahmad Rida followed the Qādri tariqah and was initiated into that sufi order by the noble spiritual master, Sayyid Khatimul-Akaabir Sha Alĕ-Rasul Ahmadi al-Husaini al-Qādri Barkaati of Mārahra (a town in northern India).
Strict Adherence to Sunnah and Abhorrence of Bid’a-tus-Sū’
As is expected of a great scholar of his caliber, Imām Ahmad Rida was insistent upon strict adherence to sunnah/way of the Prophet (pbuh) and abhorred bid’a-tus-sū’/ negative innovations. He vehemently opposed any excesses at Muslim gatherings to commemorate Islamic events such as fireworks, food wastage, and music; considering any such overindulgence as un-Islamic. There are explicit fatāwa/religious verdicts he has given regarding such matters.
He specifically cautioned people regarding their conduct when visiting graves as is evident in his response to a question about visiting the shrines of saints, the Imām responded: “When one enters the mazārāt/shrines of Auliyā’e Kirām/saintly personalities, one should do so from the foot end and as far as possible one should maintain one’s presence at a distance of four hand lengths. Thereafter, in a moderate voice, one should announce greetings … thereafter, one should make du’ā/supplicate to Almighty Allah for any request which is permissible by sharī’ah.” (Mas’ala No. 169, Page 212, Volume 4 of Fatawa Razvia)
For one who is undoubtedly an ‘Āshiqĕ Rasūl/adorer of the Messenger, Imām Ahmad Rida not only eulogized the Prophet (pbuh) in poetry, but also championed the sunnah/Prophet’s way in his teachings.

Once Imam Ahmed Raza forms an opinion he stays firm on it; he expresses his opinion after a sober reflection. Therefore, the need never arises to withdraw any of his religious decrees and judgements. With all this, by nature he was hot tempered, and if this was not in the way, then Shāh Ahmed Raza would have been the Imām Abū Hanīfah of his age.”
